AR Mountain Accelerated Reader is a reading practice program designed to encourage students to read books at their independent reading level and provide measurable feedback on the student's progress. Students choose books to read that are at their independent reading level. AR reading levels are given to the students by their teachers. Students earn points by taking AR quizzes on books that they have read. The quizzes show whether or not the student has comprehended the book.
The AR mountain is our school's reading incentive program. Our reading mountain is a bit like the real Mt. Whitney. Both are beautiful, strong, and inspiring. There are four levels that students strive to reach as they climb Mt. Whitney: hiker, climber, mountaineer, and guide. Students who scale to the top of Mt. Whitney and become a guide earn a gold medal. *** Of course, the picture at the top of each page of this website is not Mount Whitney. I have used a picture taken in Yosemite (during one of the most inspiring hikes I have ever experienced) to illustrate how students can be inspired by the books they read and how even those who have struggled to learn to read can become strong readers.
